Welcome to 2023

It is New Year’s Day, in case you wondered. It’s also Sunday. The NFL is out in full force, and so is Mrs. Lion’s paddle. Thanks to the Giants losing last week, I’m up to nine swats per point. Each touchdown is a painful 56 swats. I hope it’s a low-scoring game.

I’m grateful that Mrs. Lion and I are both alive and well. We survived another year. Given the scary COVID and flu epidemics, nothing is certain. Just when we imagined we were clear of the pandemic, a new wave started in China with yet another mutation of COVID-19. At least Mrs. Lion won’t catch it at work. Her job is permanently at home.

I’m working on a new book. My finished opus hasn’t drawn any interest from agents. It looks like writing is a hobby. I had dreams of making a living with my novel. That dream fades more each week that I go unpublished. I’ve temporarily (maybe) stopped writing beyond the blog. It’s hard to get up the energy to work on what is almost certainly going to fail.

Maybe my New Year’s resolution should be to keep writing fiction. Why not? It isn’t that I have much else to compete for my time. No matter how hard I try, I can’t get interested in Facebook. It’s a cesspool of ignorance and misinformation. Twitter’s no different. Social media is the anus of technology.

Speaking of technology, Julie of Strict Julie Spanked came across an artificial intelligence project that constructs fiction based on what it’s told. She experimented, and it produced some good soft-core porn. Her post “A.I. Is here, and a bit kinky…” shows what she managed to get it to write for her. Amazing.

That’s something else I want to do this year. I want to point out worthwhile reading in other blogs. I don’t read a ton of blogs, but when I come across good stuff, I’ll let you know. If this post seems a little unfocused, it’s because I am. I started 2022 with such high hopes. The year ended with the literary world displaying complete indifference to my work. Worse, I don’t think a single agent read a line of my book. I’m very sure that my promotional letter wasn’t exciting enough to draw them in.

Maybe I need a new direction. I don’t know.

Thanks for listening.
